SPEARHEADING THE GREEN REVOLUTION

One of the Greatest Challenge

We need to deal with the climate change. Its consequences impact many different aspects of our lives and thereby steel plays a major role. Steel is the world’s most recycled material, it’s 100 % recyclable, environmentally sustainable and it is the essential material for the energy transition and transformation.

Although the steel industry in Germany today produces steel under the best conditions worldwide, the path to climate neutrality is only possible with a change in technology, especially in primary steel production. In order to produce steel from iron ores in a climate-neutral manner, hydrogen can also be used as a reducing agent instead of carbon.

Carbon-Neutral Production

The Energiron hydrogen-based direct reduction (in short words DRI: Direct Reduced Iron) is a proven and practical technology, that can be used in the steel industry to reduce CO2 emissions to almost zero. The pellet-shaped iron ores are introduced in a shaft furnace, where a stream of hydrogen-rich gas at proper conditions reduces the iron oxide to metallic iron in solid state. Since the direct reduction process takes place at lower temperatures than in the blast furnace, the material remains in solid state (sponge iron is produced, called “DRI”) and the process requires less energy. DRI is a virgin source of pure iron, which is then further processed, for example, in an electric arc furnace or melting furnace, where steel is finally refined. Using hydrogen allows to achieve the carbon neutrality, since no or only very little CO2 is emitted during the ironmaking process.

The ENERGIRON Alliance

ENERGIRON is the innovative HYL Direct Reduction Technology, jointly developed by TENOVA and DANIELI. The unique product of this technology is much more than the reduced direct iron. It is the energy combined with the iron, for the lowest cost, the highest quality and environmental friendliness for iron and steel applications. ENERGIRON is the only proven hydrogen-based direct reduction technology available today.
